Amor de Mar: Fairytale Feelings in Montezuma

From the second you set foot in Amor de Mar, it feels as if you are in a bubble of beauty – a place straight out of a fairytale story.

It feels very private and secluded, though in actuality just a few minutes’ walk from town. The expansive, gorgeous, and naturally landscaped grounds support the feeling of being somewhere far, far away from any troubles or worries. Every direction you turn, gently swaying palm trees, brightly blooming flowers, and interesting plants greet your vision.

Hammocks are plentifully placed throughout the property, and are absolutely perfect for reading, or simply swaying in the breeze and enjoying the view.

My favorite hammock peered out onto the water, and was my favorite spot for reading on my Kindle. I even tossed off my shoes and enjoyed the feeling of soft grass in my toes.

The plush grass eventually secedes to stone and water, as the hotel is located on the edge of the ocean, and the sounds of gentle waves mute any other noises. Amor de Mar Montezuma Costa Rica Amor de Mar Montezuma Costa Rica Amor de Mar Montezuma Costa Rica Amor de Mar Montezuma Costa Rica

As the tide comes in, it forms beautiful, clear natural pools for playing in or simply gazing at sea creatures.

If you can drag yourself away from the amazing outdoors, and sights of sea and tree, you’ll be equally delighted by your accommodations.

I stayed in the house on the property – an awesome place for hosting a family or small group. It’d be an awesome location for a tastefully alternative bachelor or bachelorette party as well.

The house is complete with an awesome kitchen – perfect for preferred self-caterers like myself.

There are seemingly endless spaces for gathering, sitting, and talking – both indoor and outdoor. The beautiful, varied lighting is able to set any mood, from dim and romantic lamps to bright and cheerful overhead lighting.

Once worn out and ready for some snoozing, the indulgent four poster beds – complete with practical netting that also looks wistfully romantic – are extremely comfortable and welcoming.

Speaking of welcoming, Amor de Mar is a family owned favorite and the welcome you receive is second to none. The front desk was manned by Matheus at check-in (though I also had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie later), and he was super helpful in showing me around and providing information on the area. He even stopped by later to help me close up the big windows on the front of the house for the night – very thoughtful and appreciated.

The hotel is renowned for its attention to detail on every aspect of a guest’s stay, and it is evident in every nook and cranny. Fun architectural details, special flowers, towel animals, and locally sourced breakfasts are just a few favorite examples.

The beautiful and outstanding service doesn’t go unnoticed. In 2011 Hotel Amor de Mar was picked as one the 9 Best Secret Hotels under $210 in the World by CNN Travel and I have to agree! It is an absolute dream!

The beautiful, welcoming Amor de Mar is open year round. Especially slow during October and September, these are great months for bargain hunters as the price will drop substantially. The rainy, slow season even has its upsides (aside from low prices, of course), as there is less dust and the water levels are higher.

Located on the edge of Montezuma, far removed from any noise or commotion yet only a 5 minute walk to restaurants, Amor de Mar is perfectly situated.

Directly across from the Montezuma Waterfall, you could easily make the short hike for a dip in the cool pool every morning.

The place looks really amazing. One question though: How is the situation with mosquitos? As it is situated by the sea.

To be honest, I never have a problem with mosquitos, and have never been bitten in all of Central and South America, and I only use bug spray when trekking (someone told me it is because I’ve been a vegetarian so long but I don’t know how much truth there is in that)… so maybe I’m not the best to offer advice on the matter. In addition to not getting bit, I didn’t see any mosquitos anywhere. The beds in the house I stayed also came with mosquito nets for extra protection.
I REALLY dislike bugs, and I left all the windows and upstairs doors open (without screens) all day, and then simply shut them at dark so that bugs wouldn’t be attracted to the lights, and I didn’t have any problems.
